A life closer to the sea
ALBA STUDIO
After twelve years in London, I found my way back home to Puglia, in southern Italy.
I returned with a desire to live differently: to spend more time outdoors, to reconnect with the sea, to explore new places and to make space for something that had always been part of me — creating.
Painting became a way of translating these experiences into something tangible.
My work is deeply influenced by freediving. When I descend beneath the surface and hold my breath, everything changes. Sound fades, movement becomes slower, and the body feels almost weightless. Floating underwater feels a little like flying. It is a place where I find stillness, perspective and a profound sense of connection.
I am drawn to the colours and textures of the underwater world: the shifting blues, the transparency of shallow water, the deeper shades that emerge with depth, and the light dancing across the seabed.
Living in Puglia keeps me close to the Mediterranean, while travelling — particularly to places like Indonesia and Raja Ampat — continually expands my relationship with colour and the sea.
Through acrylics and mixed media on canvas, I try to translate these experiences into paintings that invite others to pause, look closer and feel something of that world for themselves.
Not simply a view of the sea, but a feeling to live with.
